Model Changes
The Milan gets a number of small changes to 2009 standard and optional equipment. Traction control is now a standard feature on V-6 models, as is stability control. Satellite radio is now standard on the entire line, and ambient lighting is now standard on the Premier.
A new "runway-inspired" VOGA model ramps up the Milan's style with Cashmere inserts, special film appliques, chrome accents and chrome-clad wheels and seat embroidering.
Several new paint colors are now available: Brilliant Silver Metallic, Smokestone Metallic, Sport Blue Metallic, Tuxedo Black Metallic and White Platinum Tri-coat.
Model Value
The Milan has a distinctive style compared to other mid-size sedans, yet it's not any more expensive, and it has excellent handling. The Milan has a roomy trunk, with seats that are especially easy to fold. The vehicle features best-in-class storage space. The advanced Sync voice-activated calling and audio system allows the user to access phones, PDAs, iPods and even USB drives. It is one of the most versatile and user-friendly interfaces on the market.
Model Overview
The Milan can be specified with either a four-cylinder engine or a V-6. The base 160-horsepower four-cylinder engine provides adequate performance with the five-speed automatic transmission; it rates at an economical 20 mpg city, 29 highway. Also available is a 221-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6, which provides more impressive performance and strong passing power; it's only offered with a responsive six-speed automatic. On V-6 models all-wheel drive is also available to help gain traction on slippery winter roads. Both engines can be mated with base or upscale Premier trim.
The Milan's styling is similar to that of the mechanically identical Ford Fusion, but it has a version of Mercury's waterfall grille in front, a different tail lamp design, and soft-toned satin aluminum trim throughout. A four-wheel independent suspension and precise rack-and-pinion steering make the Milan especially enjoyable to drive on twisty roads while maintaining a comfortable ride.
The Milan has seating for three in back. A split-folding back seat allows the spacious trunk to accommodate large cargo items, and a spring assist system makes folding it down especially easy. The front passenger seat also folds down.
Anti-lock brakes, front side airbags, and side-curtain airbags are all now standard on the Milan, and electronic stability control is now optional.
Base models have an extensive standard equipment list. It includes a power driver's seat, air conditioning, cruise control, keypad keyless entry, an alarm system and a six-speaker audio system with Sirius satellite radio. Premier models get a wide range of standard luxury features such as leather upholstery, automatic climate control, and an upgraded sound system with steering-wheel audio controls, plus fog lamps
and larger 17-inch alloy wheels. The Premier also includes Sync, a voice-activated calling and sound-system device that interfaces with cellphones, PDAs, and portable audio players; the system will even read test messages.
Several of the top options bring luxury-car features and comforts to the Milan. Among them are a DVD-based touch-screen navigation system, a premium Audiophile sound system, heated seats, a power moonroof, and reverse sensing. Especially noteworthy for 2009 is the VOGA package, which includes custom cashmere leather seats, cashmere inserts, chrome-clad wheels, and special embroidering. Distinctive Wales mahogany trim is also available.
